AstraZeneca posts profits increase

28 Apr 2010

Drugs giant AstraZeneca reported a 17 per cent rise in pre-tax profits to £2.3bn in the first quarter of 2010 as it increased full-year earnings targets.

The Anglo-Swedish group saw a strong performance from key drugs such as cholesterol-busting treatment Crestor.

But it warned that second half revenue comparatives would be tough after the swine flu boost last year.

Shearings targets the under-50s

26 Apr 2010

Tour operator Shearings is seeking to boost sales this year by attracting more younger customers with offers such as activity-based trips, chief executive Denis Wormwell said today.

Wigan-based Shearings has traditionally provided coach travel and accommodation for older holidaymakers, predominantly those over 50, but aims to diversify its customer base by offering themed trips to destinations including vineyards in Europe.

Its policy is already paying off across its hotels, with more younger, independent travellers making bookings, particularly at its Coast and Country brand.

Mr Wormwell says this provides greater opportunities to cross sell to new customers.

More investment is planned this year in Shearings’ hotels, and products offering new European locations, he added. Shearings’ investment plans were announced as the group posted revealed adjusted underlying pre-tax profits for 2009 of £4.1m, up eight per cent on a year earlier.

Revenues were down slightly, from £183.7m to £180.4m, with the pound’s weakness largely to blame.

The group’s hotels saw revenues up eight per cent.

Looking for Secured Business Credit Cards?

Secured Business Credit Cards

While consumers have more than enough secured credit card offers to choose from it seems to be more of a challenge for small business owners.

If you are having a hard time finding the right secured business credit cards for your company don’t worry because I’m hoping this post will point you in the right direction.

What’s most important is first ensuring that the secured card you select as a business does in fact report to the business credit reporting agencies not your personal files.

Most of the cards you hear about that help rebuild your credit are for consumers and not for businesses. You also have to be careful because some of these cards will hurt your credit rather than help it.

What I mean is that some cards in the marketplace are issued by high risk lenders and by having these types of cards reporting on your files will automatically identify you as a high risk to other lenders in the industry.

For example, First Premier Bank is known as a high risk lender and its rates prove it. They e

Are Your Business Credit Reports in Need of Repair?

23 Apr 2010

In today’s turbulent times, business owners should be diligent in protecting and, if necessary, repairing their business credit reports.< ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Unfortunately there’s not much helpful information regarding business credit repair and how you go about correcting errors, inaccuracies or obsolete information on your files with the three main business credit bureaus.

Just the other day one of my members was debating whether to purchase a shelf corporation or work on his existing entity which had two derogatory marks on its DNB file.

He felt it would be much easier to start over instead of working on repairing his existing file because he had no idea of how to go about correcting it.

I suggested he follow some simple steps to initiate an investigation and after one business day his file was updated and the negative marks were both deleted on his file.

This is why it’s so important to monitor your files because the only one who is policing them and ensuring that the data being reported is accurate is you!

There are currently no laws that protect business owners from unfair business credit reporting, like the Fair Credit Reporting Act does for consumers.

NCC is back on the buyout trail at SDLC

22 Apr 2010

IT security business NCC Group has acquired Wilmslow-based SDLC Solutions in a £15m deal.

SDLC, an IT testing company, has been bought for an initial consideration of £7.75m in cash, with two further payments of up to £7.25m against performance related targets over the next 26 months.

Manchester-based NCC said the deal would allow it to provide a wider range of information security assurance services.

It has a £25m bank facility with the Royal Bank of Scotland to fund acquisitions and last month bought Warrington-based Meridian Services International for up to £3m, after previously making swoops in the UK, US and Europe.

SDLC posted revenues of £12m for the year to April, 2010 and has an £11m order book for the next financial year, with much of its business coming from recurring contracts with blue chip corporations.

It employs more than 70 full time staff and over 60 associates.

It will be managed autonomously by SDLC’s existing management team and will trade as SDLC Solutions, a NCC Group company.

NCC provides IT security testing and ‘escrow’ services that enable customers to copy software programme codes to protect them if a supplier goes bust,

Chief executive Rob Cotton said: “SDLC is one of the UK’s most respected testing services companies.

“Its addition to the group will enable us to provide a total assurance service by including functional testing.

“We are now able to offer our clients the ability to mitigate risk throughout every stage of their IT infrastructure, software and information security decision making.

“Introducing our information security services and clients to SDLC’s extensive expertise will further strengthen our position, whilst we will be able to provide a wider range of services to SDLC’s client base.”

“We are confident that the management team will continue to maintain their excellent track record of revenue and profit growth, supported by our resources and the Group’s wider client base.”

Watchdog attacked over tobacco pricing fines

17 Apr 2010

The Co-op and Morrisons have hit back after being handed millions of pounds in fines by the Office of Fair Trading for unlawful pricing on tobacco products.

The Co-op was one of 10 retailers and two tobacco manufacturers hit with a record £225m in fines for ‘price matching’, where cigarette and tobacco prices of rival manufacturers were linked.

But it said it was considering appealing the decision.

The Co-operative, which was handed the biggest fine of any retailer at £14.2m, said: “Throughout the investigation to date our judgment has been that our behaviour during the years in question did not infringe competition law nor did it result in consumers paying more for tobacco products than they otherwise would have done.”

Morrisons – fined £8.6m – said the OFT’s stance was “disappointing”, as well as “illogical and without foundation”.

It said: “The practices to which the OFT refers were intended to reduce the retail prices charged to consumers.”

The appeal is likely to be the supermarket’s second clash with the watchdog in two years after the OFT wrongly accused it of anti-competitive behaviour in dairy markets in 2008. It apologised and paid £100,0
