Burst pipes lead to large home insurance claims
Burst pipes may necessitate a hefty home insurance claim. People who experience a burst pipe this winter are likely to need to put in a significant claim, Virgin Money Home Insurance has revealed.
The average claim for a burst pipe and associated water damage is close to £3,000, according to the insurer, whereas a typical payout for the loss or theft of personal possessions is less than £500.
With over 15% of all claims between December 2008 and November 2009 due to the problem, the insurer is keen to highlight ways in which householders can protect their property.
Virgin Money spokesman Grant Bather commented: “With the Met Office forecasting more cold weather over the coming weeks across the country, homeowners should make sure that they have adequate insurance and are taking the necessary precautions to minimise the possibility of freezing or faulty pipes.
“Turning on your hot water and central heating for just an hour or two each day could help to reduce the possibility of your pipes freezing over.”
Severn Trent Water has warned that landlords may be particularly at risk from frozen pipes, as their properties may have been unoccupied over the New Year period.
Senior operations manager Fraser Pithie urged landlords and agents to check the internal water pipe-work in their properties to avoid problems.
