Anxieties over Italy and Spain drag the market down

11 Jul 2011

Shares in Britain’s banks dragged the London market down, amid fears Italy and Spain could follow in the footsteps of Greece and Ireland.

Concerns the two nations could require an EU-funded bailout caused investors to flee risky assets.

By lunchtime, the FTSE 100 Index tumbled 91 points to 5837.3 and had been down 120 points at one stage, with jitters over the exposure of banks to sovereign debts causing Lloyds to fall by 0.8p to 44p, while Barclays lost 6.1p at 227.7p and Royal Bank of Scotland dipped 0.3p at 35.4p.

Meanwhile, the Dax in Germany and the CAC 40 in France fell more than two per cent.

Aviva, which generated sales of more than £1bn from operations in Italy and Spain in the first three months of this year, dropped 8.6p to 410.49p. The euro was hit by the debt fears, falling against most currencies.

“The risk of a major eurozone bank collapsing cannot be ruled out and this threat would only heighten a ‘Lehman-style’ moment,” said Neil MacKinnon, a strategist at VTB Capital.

Britain’s exposure to the Italian economy was£43bn at the end of March, according to Bank of England figures. British b

Are petrol prices bringing your business to a standstill?

10 Jul 2011

While the 3p rise in duty is the last thing small businesses need to worry about, now could be the best time to ditch the car and try out conference calling. Cutting out unnecessary travel can help reduce those future petrol bills, plus help with productivity and improve employees’ work-life balance.

Over the phone, internet or via video, conference calling no longer means participants need to huddle around one loudspeaker. Up to 40 people can join one call direct from their desks no matter if they’re in the same city, county or country.

Still not enough? Why not try out web conferencing, which lets participants share, view and discuss documents and presentations in real time.

Timely, efficient and more productive than hours in the car, conferencing could be just what your business needs to save money.

Hoarding Hinders Success

10 Jul 2011

Face it. Unless your goals are very small, you’re going to need help. Or at least some support. Unless you can do the work of the whole team by yourself, both performance and morale are going to suffer. You must quit hoarding and learn to delegate.

Be honest.

  • Do you hoard tasks, keeping your favorite ones for yourself?
  • Do you “throw” tasks at people without an overall plan or sufficient follow-up? And then complain because they never really got it?
  • Do you micromanage because you don’t trust others to do it “right?”
  • Do you think it’s easier or faster to just do it yourself?

If you answered yes to some of the questions above, you may have a delegation problem. The majority of managers do.

Andrew Carnegie said years ago, “No man will make a great leader who wants to do it all himself, or to get all the credit for doing it.” Wanting all the credit is one thing; wanting to do it all yourself, for whatever reason, is another.

Time is our most precious commodity.
