British Gas price rise of 18% on gas and 16% on electricity announced

08 Jul 2011

British Gas price rise of 18% on gas and 16% on electricity announced British Gas has announced a price rise of 18% or £121 on gas and 16% or £71 on electricity, which will take effect on 18th August 2011.

The move will add an extra £192 onto the average annual standard dual fuel bill for a British Gas customer.

This will bring the average annual cost of a standard dual fuel bill from £1,096 to £1,288, and affect 9 million of its customers.

The news will come as a shock for British Gas customers who last experienced a price rise in December, when the company increased its prices by 6.9% or £43 for gas and 6.7% or £28 for electricity.

This means, within the space of a year, British Gas customers will have seen their bills hiked by £258 or 25%.

This compares with the £239 or 21% increase seen by ScottishPower customers.

Last month ScottishPower revealed that it would be raising its prices by 19% on gas and 10% on electricity from August this year.

Franchise Gives Entrepreneur A Clean Start

08 Jul 2011

How man execs will clean windows? Probably not many, but Robin Handy will.

According to StarTribune, Robin is an entrepreneur at heart. That is why he would rather demonstrate his cleaning product as the president of his own company than work as an executive in an office.

As the states master franchisor for Heits Building Services, a New Jersey-based commercial building maintenance company, Handy plays a dual sales role.

His first priority is to develop accounts, signing up companies and building owners needing daily cleaning services as well as specialty services such as intensive floor cleaning, painting and carpet cleaning. At the same time, Handy also is busy lining up franchisees who will perform those services.

With an MBA in marketing from the University of Minnesotas Carlson School of Management, Handy began looking at his options after getting downsized twice in recent years from district manager positions, first with Pfizer, then with Schering-Plough.

Im done with the corporate experience, said Handy, who looked at both franchise and independent business opportunities.

Steel makers limited in cutting carbon

07 Jul 2011

OneSteel is seeking to reduce its use of coking coal in steel manufacturing, but says the sector is technologically constrained in its ability to reduce carbon emissions.

In steel making, there is no substitute for coking coal, which has specific properties needed for refining iron in blast furnaces.

Chairman Peter Smedley says there is no new technology available currently “or in the foreseeable future” that will allow OneSteel to materially reduce emissions.

“As a result, rather than to act as a price signal to reduce emissions, a carbon tax would merely be an additional cost burden that we would not be able to pass through to customers,” Mr Smedley told a business function in Adelaide on Friday.

With steel making being among the most emissions-intensive industries, OneSteel and competitor BlueScope will be scrutinising the fine print of the carbon tax when the federal government unveils the full details on Sunday.

While the steel industry had so far been strongly opposed to the carbon tax, OneSteel did not dispute the need for action to reduce global emissions, Mr Smedley said.

Access and dialogue with the federal government had been positive, and he believed the Commonwealth now understood the potential implications of the tax on the Australian steel industry’s competitive position.

Mr Smedley reiterated his concern about the cumulative impact of the new carbon tax and mining tax on the company.

OneSteel last year said the first version of the mining tax threatened to derail its operations in Whyalla and in Newcastle, NSW. Full Article…

How business rate changes will affect you

06 Jul 2011

According to the government, around 345,000 small businesses will benefit from the business rate freeze, including 100,000 shops, 90,000 industrial businesses and around 60,000 offices. But while it’s good news for some, how do you know if your small company will benefit in October 2010?

The new initiative will mean that businesses with a rateable value of up to £6,000 per annum will not have to pay any rates for 12 months. Those with premises with rateable values up to £12,000 will also qualify for partial rates relief.

This means that business rates will fall from 48.5p in the pound, to 41.4p for the year starting October 2010.

How Kamal Basran launched a food empire from her kitchen table

06 Jul 2011

Kamal Basran laughs when she remembers the first time she took home a packet of samosas.

It was the early 80s and she was so excited that the local supermarket was selling ready made Asian snacks that she didn’t think twice about buying them.

But that soon turned to disappointment when she took her first bite.

“That initial excitement soon turned to shock because they were so bad. They were bland and didn’t taste of anything,” she recalls.

That initial shock was also the moment and she realised she could do better and the idea to start her own business selling authentic Indian food was born.
