This years NAB gave us two Ah Ha moments. First, there are no real centralizing movie, TV show production enclaves anymore. The industry may make its money on good ideas creatively executed, but the industrys spirits rest in huge and we mean huge storage libraries spread around the country, around the globe. But before we discuss what was new, better, ready for use tomorrow, we need to do a little clean-up from the first two days.

The Other Tools
Previews Like showing the previews of an upcoming movie, Apple showed off the very best features of the newest version of Final Cut Pro which will be available later this summer. Source Apple

Apple, in their typical fashion, showed without showing the next generation of Final Cut Pro. They called it a sneak peak because even though it has been rebuilt from the ground up, it shows that the fruit company is going to continue to be a big player in professional content production. Typically, it was a beautifully orchestrated event that got you all excited but you couldnt really put your finger on what got your motor running other than the price $299.

£24.5m grant designed to create jobs

10 Apr 2011

Thousands of jobs will be created after the government announced grants worth £24.5m to projects across the region.

A scheme to transform the Former Royal Eye Hospital, in Manchester, into a biomedical centre of excellence is one of the Regional Growth Fund (RGF) recipients, announced by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg today.

Another is the creation of a new headquarters for advanced manufacturing firm Mono Pumps, in Ashton Moss, which specialises in research and development work.

It is understood that together the two projects, both led by the newly-created Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), will receive around £6m.

Among the other schemes set to get RGF funding is the development of a new factory, research and development centre and office complex for high-tech machine manufacturers Holroyd Precision, in Rochdale.

Vacuum bagging specialists Tygavac, also in Rochdale, are another of the successful applicants. The firm’s grant will fund a new high-tech manufacturing plant.

Announcing the grants, Mr Clegg said: “I am delighted to announce the first successful bids for the Regional Growth Fund. I

New rules make it faster to switch and keep your mobile phone number

09 Apr 2011

The new rules mean that mobile phone networks must halve the amount of time it takes them to provide a customer with their PAC code.

The PAC code is the code required to transfer a mobile number from one provider to another.
Ofgem has ruled that this code must now be made available immediately over the phone or within two hours by text message.

Therefore, customers will be able to change their number within one working day rather than two.

Ernest Doku, technology expert at uSwitch, comments: “Ofcom’s decision places the power back into consumers’ hands, putting them in a much stronger position to move networks and save money on their mobile.

“This move is long overdue and finally puts the UK on a level playing field with the rest of Europe.

“The process of keeping your phone number when you switch networks has been extremely cumbersome until now and has been a major barrier to switching.

“In fact over 18 million have never switched mobile phone network with many concerned about losing their phone number.

“Mobile numbers are as important as home addresses these days.

“Anyone who has lost their phone will know what a hassle it is to contact everyone you know with your new number – so of course people want to keep their number when they switch.”

More may be tempted to switch mobile providers in search of a better deal, said Doku: “At a time when household finances are stretched to the limit, it’s more important than ever for consumers to make sure that they are getting the best deal – be it on food, fuel or their phone bills.

“From today it should be far simpler to pick an attractive deal and switch to it without the dread of having to communicate a new number to all your friends and family.”

Artists, Music, Audiences Change Labels Find it Tough

09 Apr 2011

“Hey, Riley, were all plugged in and checked up yeah, were ready.” – Buddy Holly, The Buddy Holly Story, ECA Productions (1978)

Music is dying if you believe the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America). Music is a growing business if you believe Apple, Google, Spotify, Yahoo Music, Artist Direct, My Space Music, Pandora and hundreds of other options. They’re right … all of them. The “good ol days” are gone. Everything lives in phases … music is no different:
– 8-tracks had their peak in ’78 of $3.1 B according to the RIAA
– LPs had their peak in ’78 of $8.1B
– Cassettes had their peak in ’88 of $6.1B
– CDs peaked in 99 with $16.4B
– Albums began their rise with downloads of $1B in ‘10
– Singles jumped out with downloads of $1.6B in ‘10
– Mobile “sales” is going to be huge but….

Sure, Warner Music is up for grabs but the buzzards see a feast in the carcass… a library that’s worth gazillions. Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens were killed in a plane crash in ’59 and everyone called it the day the music died. For Elvis fans there was a similar fe

‘Wednesday of Woe’ as taxes rise and benefits are cut

05 Apr 2011

As the first day of the new tax year, today brings new taxes including the government’s decision to lower the rate at which the higher 40% tax is paid from £43,875 to £42,475.

But families are already struggling to make their money stretch, as recent research from the Centre for Economics and Business Research, on behalf of BBC’s Panorama, showed that since the height of the recession in 2009, the average employee has had to take a 5% pay cut, which is equivalent to £1,088 per year.

And in addition to low wages, Brits are also struggling with inflation at a 20-year high, an increase in VAT from 17.5% to 20% and high fuel costs.

Mike Warburton, Senior Tax Partner at accountants Grant Thornton, told This is Money: “Those on the lowest incomes will benefit most from the tax changes with those on middle incomes being squeezed.

“The hard fact is that we are all having to tighten our belts this year as we cope with the increase in VAT together with rising fuel and most other costs.”

Altrincham businessman jailed after £60m VAT fraud

04 Apr 2011

An Altrincham businessman has been jailed for his role in a major international VAT and money laundering plot which stole £60m from the public purse.

Mohammed Munir Chaudhary, 59, of Bradgate Road, was sentenced to three years in prison at Birmingham Crown Court after he pleaded guilty to money laundering.

He was also disqualified for ten years from being a company director and a Confiscation Order was successfully obtained for £293,791.

Chaudhary was a company secretary of a business called Cableframe Telecom, which traded in computer processing chips totalling £141m, though VAT of £21m was never paid.

The case was part of a nine-year investigation by officers from HM Revenue & Customs code-named Operation Capri which saw seventeen defendants in five trials jailed for a total of 59 years.

Officers unraveled a complex multi-million VAT ‘missing trader’ fraud, which also included the laundering of the proceeds of these crimes and involved the corruption of a serving Customs Officer and a bank official.

‘Missing trader’ fraud sees criminals import high value goods such as mobile phones and computer chips, free of VAT, from other countries in the EU.

These goods are then sold in the UK with VAT attached, but the criminals disappear with the tax they have collected instead of handing it over to HMRC.

Five trials have taken place four at Northampton and one at Birmingham Crown Courts since May 2005. All have be
