Are Ultra-Niche Menus the Latest Restaurant Trend?

05 Dec 2010

What’s the latest trend in the food industry? According to the New York Times, it’s ultraniche restaurants. Restaurants specializing in one type of food—and I don’t mean just Italian or soul food, but a single entrée, like meatballs or fried chicken—are springing up all over New York.

In fact, says one food expert cited by the Times, single-food restaurants are popping up across the country. (Maybe the popularity of cupcake shops started the trend?). However, cautions John D. R. Walker, a professor at the school of hotel and restaurant management at the University of South Florida in Sarasota, single-entrée restaurants are most likely to succeed in big cities, where there’s a critical mass of population with a craving for one item.

What’s behind the one-item trend? One factor is the rise of food bloggers, TV shows spotlighting particular cuisines, and ratings and review sites like Yelp!.com. The result has

Have you received your first Cold Weather Payment?

04 Dec 2010

Cold Weather payments are paid out to people on certain benefits to help them pay for heating during winter months.

This includes pensioners on Pension Credit, those on welfare with children under the age of five or on Income Support or Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance and the disabled.

If the temperature falls below freezing for seven consecutive days, eligible households will receive £25 for each seven-day period between 1 November and 31 March.

Those who are on the appropriate benefits do not need to apply for Cold Weather Payments as they will automatically receive the payment, usually to the same bank account which receives their other benefits.

There has been some concern this year that the early onslaught of freezing temperatures would stretch the Treasury budget – the payments so far have come to a total of £103 million, 27 million more than the government forecast for the entire year.

Last year, another particularly cold winter, saw the government spend £300 million on Cold Weather Payments, and this year looks like another record year for sustained cold temperatures.

If you feel that you are eligible for Cold Weather Payments and have not received any money, you are encouraged to contact you pension centre or Jobcentre Plus.

Proposed Thomas Cook/Co-op merger ‘threatens competition’

02 Dec 2010

The proposed merger of the high street travel businesses of Thomas Cook and the Co-op was dealt a blow today after the Office of Fair Trading said the move significantly threatened competition.

The OFT reached its ‘initial view’ following a consultation and today asked the European Commission for permission to take over the investigation into the proposed joint venture.

With more than 1,300 shops, the newly formed company would be the UK’s largest travel agent and second biggest in foreign exchange.

Following an in-depth probe, the OFT could refer the proposed merger to the Competition Commission, which would have the power to block the plans.

Manny Fontenla-Novoa, chief executive of Thomas Cook, said: “We always knew that this request was a possibility and we will continue to work closely with the relevant authorities.

In today’s edition of the best holiday foods, we will take a look at a company that makes some of the best Chocolate Chip Cookies in the world. The company is The Christie Cookie Company. Christie Cookie makes those giant chocolate chip cookies that are served at the Doubletree Hotel.

I found this company after staying at a Doubletree Hotel a few years ago. I loved the cookies that the Doubletree gives its customers every morning. So, I called the Doubletree Hotel when I returned home from my trip to find out who supplies their cookies. They transferred me to the corporate headquarters who then put me in touch with The Christie Cookie Company. I ordered some of their cookies and was definitely not disappointed.

I have to admit its been a few years since I have ordered cookies from the company but whenever I have placed an order, the cookies were great. The cookies are reasonably priced with a tin of 6 giant cookies costings just $10.95. Be warned however. Full Article…
