SW chicken firms call in administrators

30 Oct 2010

Two South West poultry producers that trade as Finnesse Foods and Ferguson Valley Chicken have gone into voluntary administration.

Gold Level Enterprises which operates an abattoir in Dardanup and Goldfin Enterprises which operates a processing plant just outside of Bunbury appointed Kim Strickland and David Hurt from WA Insolvency Solutions as administrators yesterday afternoon.

More than 130 people are employed between the two companies.

Mr Strickland said he and Mr Hurt were in the process of assessing the financial position of Gold Level Enterprises and Goldfin Enterprises.

Mr Strickland said a couple of million dollars was owed to suppliers and the National Australia Bank was owed an amount of money, which he would not disclose.

“We’ve had total support of creditors and suppliers who say they will continue to supply the companies,” he said.

He said the position of the workforce was also very strong.

“Employee entitlements are strong,” said Mr Strickland.

“There are lots of assets to cover them and there is no intention of putting anyone off at this stage.”

Mr Strickland said it was fundamentally a good business.

“We’re assessing the profitability and cash flow issues and planning to put together a restructuring plan in the next five weeks,” he said.

Mr Strickland said the business will continue and that many of the issues that had resulted in it getting into financial trouble had already been identified.

SSE price rise: will all gas prices go up?

28 Oct 2010

SSE (also known as Scottish and Southern Energy, which encompasses Southern Electric, Scottish Hydro, SWALEC and Atlantic) has increased gas prices by an average of £67 for customers on its standard tariffs, which will affect around 3.6 million customers.

uSwitch energy expert Tom Lyon commented: “Ofgem’s recent Quarterly Market Report predicted a squeeze on suppliers’ net margins in spring of 2011 while a similar report from the energy consultancy NERA, published around the same time, suggested that suppliers were already running at a loss and had been since June 2010.

“SSE’s move comes earlier than expected by most observers, with many predicting that suppliers would hold off till spring, but nevertheless, it’s a worrying sign and it seems unlikely that this will be the only rise we see over the next couple of months.

“It is also the first general price rise since 2008, when all supplier increased their prices and household energy bills rocket by 42% or £381.

“Prices have come down since then, but only by 8% for the average dual fuel customer.

Regional leaders welcome LEP move

26 Oct 2010

Regional leaders were today pressing ahead with moves to create a business-led Local Enterprise Partnership in Greater Manchester after winning government approval.

The LEP was one of 24 to receive backing nationwide, including one for Cheshire and Warrington.

LEPs will replaced regional development agencies as partnerships between business and local authorities to direct investment and infrastructure improvements, and will have access to a £1bn funding pot.

They are designed to support business and local authorities to grow the local private sector, tackle major barriers to growth and develop economic strategies to create jobs.

A shadow LEP will be established after the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities’ proposal secured ministerial approval before the permanent body becomes operational in April.

It is likely to comprise representatives from organisations such as the Manchester Commission for the New Economy, Marketing Manchester and inward investment agency MIDAS.

Social Media Mentions Trending Up on Business Cards

26 Oct 2010

Business cards continue to evolve over time.  What used to be a simple piece of paper that had a phone number and name on it has morphed into a double-sided snapshot of someone’s business or personality – with graphics, codes, websites, logos, colors, emails, and anything else that can set someone apart while encouraging you to connect with them.  One of the questions Vistaprint often gets is, “Are social media sites or mentions finding their way onto business cards?” We decided to find out.

As social media continues to become a greater focus for our micro business customer base, it appears that references to popular SM sites are in fact making their way onto physical direct marketing materials – specifically business cards.  A recent analysis of U.S. business car

One in three ‘know the identity of their ID thief’

22 Oct 2010

One in three of victims who have had their identity stolen claim to know who hijacked their identity personally.

Shockingly, over two thirds believe the perpetrator to be a member of their family and a quarter believes it to be one of their tenants.

However, one 2% believe that an ex-partner could be responsible and 3% a friend.

It’s not only the well off who are targeted.

Young professionals and low-income single parent families are being increasingly targeted as criminals attack more victims in ‘low value’ fraud.

Those who have recently moved, or are living in flats are at higher risk as uncollected post provides a wealth of information that could be used to steal someone’s identity.

Peter Turner from Experian’s ProtectMyID.co.uk service, comments:

“Unfortunately, it seems that those who are most trusted are also those most likely to be put under the spotlight when ID fraud is committed.

$A lower after a mixed night of trade

19 Oct 2010

The Australian dollar is almost half a US cent lower, after following a dip in commodities and a transient fall in US equities overnight.

At 0700 AEDT, the Australian dollar was trading at 97.80 US cents, down from Thursday’s close of 98.23.

Since 1700 on Thursday, the local unit traded between 97.43 US cents and 98.92 cents.

Westpac New Zealand senior market strategist Imre Speizer said it was a mixed night for the Australian dollar.

“Risk appetite for most classes (of investment), including the Aussie dollar, was positive until about 1am Sydney time and that marked a turn around in pretty much everything.

“I couldn’t pin the turnaround on any one news catalyst, but everything turned around at the one time. It was equities, commodities and the US dollar… They all kind of moved together,” Mr Speizer said from Wellington.

“I guess you can say, with the currency, it’s US dollar-led at the moment. Full Article…

Internet Marketing Doesn’t Have to Be Time Intensive

17 Oct 2010

Today’s Micro Business Perspectives guest post comes from Cathlyn Driscoll, owner of Best Business Mastery. Our micro-business is mostly consulting and runs mostly online and on the telephone. What resonated with me at Best Business Mastery with Vista Print’s Micro Business Survey was online direct marketing and social media adoption. Both are economical forms of reaching out customers and potential customers.

I disagree with the survey that they are time intensive. Managed properly – with templates, resourceful writers and a consistent schedule of newsletters, email campaigns and posts – I find it much less expensive than other forms of advertising for our niche business. Eventually though, customers will want face to face interaction and some type of printed materials in their hands, whether that is a full out 8-12 page booklet or a simple trifold brochure.

Know your audience. There is a huge difference between the way a 62 year old business owner might get his information in the morning than the 27 year old female junior executive. Deliver
