Today’s Micro Business contributed post comes from Bianca Hidalgo, owner of All Things Written.

Oxymoronic as it may seem, many people decide to start a business during economic recession. In fact, many of the current heavy hitters in big business got their start during an economic downturn – General Electric, Burger King, Microsoft, and Hewlett Packard are a few.

Whether it be necessity, opportunity, or a nothing to lose mentality, recession breeds an entrepreneurial spirit in many employees that find themselves jobless, earning less income, or with fewer prospects.

How many people have you come across in the past few months who’ve passed you a businesscard for their web or home based business? How m

House prices plummet

30 Aug 2010

House prices in the north west saw the joint biggest fall of any region in England and Wales this month as supply outstripped demand with a glut of homes coming on to the market, a report said today.

Prices in the region dropped by 0.5 per cent against July compared with a national average of 0.3 per cent, according to property analysts at Hometrack.

The 0.5 per cent decline was matched only by the south east.

Hometrack said the slide was largely due to a combination of an increased number of properties being offered for sale – up by 4.4 per cent in Greater Manchester and 5.2 per cent in Cheshire – and sluggish demand during a quiet month.

It followed strong house price gains during the first six months of the year. The number of properties being offered for sale has risen sharply since the abolition of home information packs.

The report said the average price of a north west property was £115,600. The average terrace house fetched £61,000 while an average semi-detached home sold for £99,600. Detached properties fetched £177,100 while flats sold on average for £56,800. The surv

Is It Time To Ring Up This Telephone ETF?

29 Aug 2010

In a market environment like this, investors looking to stash some cash in safe, high-yielding instruments could do a lot worse than the telecom sector.

It is certainly noteworthy that in the past month, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 are both down about 4%, the shares of AT&T (NYSE: T), CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) are all positive.

All of those stocks and others in the telecom space are backed my juicy dividend yields, making this sector a good bet for some outperformance in a trying environment such as this one.

For the trader looking to turn a boring sector into something a little more exciting, there is the ProShares Ultra Telecommunications ETF (NYSE: LTL), which is a doubled leveraged play on the Dow Jones Telecommunications.

The yield on LTL is decent at almost 2.5% and a bullish ascending triangle formation can be spotted on the chart.

A “Catchy” Name Could Get You in Trouble

28 Aug 2010

by Jason Keith: What’s in a name?

The truth is quite a bit.  As a micro business owner you’ve more than likely chosen a catchy name that incorporates what your business is, your own personal name, or something about you that you want everyone to know.  You’ve spent an inordinate amount of time agonizing over whether it sounds good, run it by your friends for their feedback and then made a series of tweaks and revisions. But the truth is there is a lot more you need to know about your businesses name than you might realize.  For example, did you know that in some states as a sole proprietorship, you are are presumed to operate under your name as the owner? If the business will operate under a different name, most jurisdictions require that a fictitious owner affidavit be filed.

As the Small Business Administration points out, there’s more to naming your business than just coming up with something that sounds good and you happen to like. Thought mu

Situation easing for first-time buyers?

26 Aug 2010

Helen Adams, Managing Director of FirstRungNow.com, revealed that 12 months ago, homebuyers would have needed a 25% deposit to get on the property ladder.

“These days there are mortgages to be had for 10% deposit but you do get charged more for that,” she explained.

Ms Adams noted that as property prices start to level out, homes are now more accessible to first-time buyers than they have been over recent months.

Lenders are supplying loans more readily, the expert stressed, which is likely to continue for some time to come.

John Charcol reported in recent days that the proportion of first-time buyers applying for mortgages increased by 80% in July.

It also revealed that there was a renewed confidence in the property market throughout July.
