Micro Business At The Speed Of ‘Net

09 Jul 2010

This guest post was written by Dawn Rivers Baker, Dawn Rivers Baker, aka The Journal Blogger, is the editor and publisher of The MicroEnterprise Journal, and the self-proclaimed Socrates of the small business blogosphere.

The jury may be out on any number of issues when it comes to American life in the 21st century — we’re only a decade in, after all — but one thing I think it’s pretty safe to say is that, in this day and age, speed matters.

I am reminded Captain Steve Hiller, the character played by Will Smith in many people’s favorite guilty pleasure movie, Independence Day (1996). Remember

Following Yesterday’s Hype of Fastest Growth in 4 Years, June Retail Sales a “Mixed Bag”

The Wall Street Journal reports Retailers Turn in a Mixed Bag for June Sales.

U.S. retailers reported mixed results for June, with some stores benefiting from aggressive promotions and others hurt by consumers’ continued restrained spending.

Retailers from department stores to teen retailers responded to limited demand with increased markdowns. Big sales during June are common as retailers try to clear shelves for fall merchandise, especially back-to-school apparel. But a number of analysts are calling June’s discounting steep.

“Many retailers pulled out all of the stops with respect to promos in June,” said Brian Sozzi, retail analyst at Wall Street Strategies. “During our store walks throughout the month, the level of promotions picked up relative to previous months.”

“Sales in electronics, video games, music and movies were particularly soft for the month,” said Target Chief Executive Gregg Steinhafel. “We con

Shearings bags hotel half-century

06 Jul 2010

Tour operator Shearings has bought its 50th hotel and unveiled plans to add up to 10 further sites over the next three years.

Wigan-based Shearings has acquired the 72-bedroom Charlecote Pheasant Hotel near Stratford-upon-Avon and is eyeing deals in areas including the Lake District, North Wales, Kent and Cornwall.

The Charlecote Pheasant, a country house hotel near junction 15 of the M40 close to Warwick and Leamington Spa as well as Stratford-upon-Avon, is Shearings’ first acquisition for two years.

It becomes the 14th hotel under the group’s Coast & Country brand.

Shearings’ investment follows a £10m refurbishment programme at its 49-strong hotel collection over the past 12 months.

The hotels division saw revenues rise eight per cent during 2009 to around £70m and Shearings chief executive Denis Wormwell said he expects further strong growth this year. Its hotels operate under the Coast  & Country and Bay brands, with sales aimed at package and self-drive customers.

Vince Flower, managing director of Shearings Hotels, said: “The last two years have seen a resurgence of the British holiday, and our investment in the business has been well-timed to capitalise on this.

Volunteering Creates Team Building

03 Jul 2010

Whether you are a business of one or one hundred, taking time out of your busy day to help others can make more of an impact than you realize.

Vistaprint’s “Vistacares” program was established a couple years ago to get employees out of the office and volunteering in the community.  Last month, we sent 2 groups of employees out to the Charles River Conservancy to help clean up overgrown plants along the riverbanks and the Greater Boston Food Bank to help sort and salvage food that is distributed across eastern Massachusetts.

I volunteered at the Greater Boston Food Bank with 24 other employees and was amazed by the operation and outreach they have.  In only a couple of hours, we sorted through 5,330 lbs of food, out of which 4,264 lbs were salvaged for distribution.  According to the food bank, our team of volunteers was able to make 109 meals possible to local families in need!

Seeing these numbers demonstrate the impact you can make in one brief afternoon.

I came across a survey by VolunteerMatch and UnitedHealthcare where approximately 4,500 people were surveyed in early 2010 regarding the benefits of volunteering.  This survey found that:

  • 8 in 10 Americans agree that they would volunteer more if their employers helped provide the opportunity
  • But only 4 in 10 Americans actually have plans to volunteer in 2010
    • Those who participate in volunteering activities report higher levels of life satisfaction, sense of control over life and feeling physically and emotionally healthier.
    • Company involvement in employee volunteer opportunities can lead to employee well‐being and positive attitudes towards the employer.

In an earlier post, we discussed some ways that your company can start to build your own charity program and give your employees the opportunity to volunteer.

When planning your own employee volunteer program (EVP), you need to first answer these simple questions:

  • What is your goal? Are you looking to volunteer for one day or a much larger commitment?  Would you prefer a team building activity or individual contribution? Answering th

Do You Really Want BP To Go Bankrupt?

02 Jul 2010

There is a huge public outcry against BP (NYSE: BP) and rightfully so. The oil conglomerate’s lax standards and reckless behavior has led to the greatest oil spill that we have ever seen. Hundreds of thousands of people are boycotting BP stations and refusing to buy their gas there. Others are rooting for a BP bankruptcy. Although BP should have to pay every dime back to claimants harmed by the oil spill, a BP bankruptcy is not in the best interests of the United States.

Here are 3 reasons to root against a BP bankruptcy.

1. The federal government would be on the hook for BP’s liabilities.

A BP bankruptcy means that the company would be unable to pay back all of its liabilities. If BP declares bankruptcy then the government would be responsible for paying off all of the damage claims. The federal government would have to reimburse fishermen, oil rig workers, cleanup crews, and other employers. More than seven million businesses have been affected by the BP oil spill. If

Profits at retailer Pets at Home rocketed to over £50m last year as the chain opened a record number of stores and expanded its ranges, including sales of reptiles such as geckos and bearded dragons for the first time.

Pets at Home, which was bought by American private equity outfit KKR from Bridgepoint Capital for £955m in January, posted a 35.6 per cent hike in pre-tax profits for the year to March 25, up from £40m to £54.24m.

The group opened a record 24 outlets during the period and has launched a further 10 sites since the start of its new financial year. It now has 266 stores nationwide.

Chief executive Matthew Davies said the Handforth, Cheshire-based group aims to open between 20 and 25 stores a year, depending on the quality of available sites, and he believes there is potential for Pets at Home to grow to around 450 outlets in the UK.

Mr Davies said: “We continued strong momentum in our growth throughout 2009, increasing turnover, profits and our store portfolio. Despite

Educate Yourself For Success

29 Jun 2010

This guest post is part of our ongoing Micro Business Experts series, and is written by Cathlyn Driscoll, co-founder of Best Business Mastery in New Jersey.

People can be lazy even when they own their own business. I think people need to get up off the couch and actually take action to fully become what they say they want to achieve. Whenever I want to learn something about web design or graphic design or learn about self improvement or how to utilize a new piece of software I don’t ask friends how they do it, I take a class or tutorial. I’m always attending seminars or webinars, tutorials, classes, listening to audio books or reading. I’m constantly researching things.  I’ve gotten a reputation as a researcher and friends and family often seek me out because they know I will delve into any topic for them to assist them.

But I think it is a truly important to look up things, follow through, and become educated in different areas. Small bu

High Risk/Reward Trading – Load Up On Beta Above S&P 1,040 (CF, FCX, AA, CAT)

28 Jun 2010

The key level that the markets are watching right now is 1,040 on the S&P 500, which is the 2010 low for the broad stock index. Sentiment on the Street right now is extremely bearish, and the consensus seems to be that we will finally break through this level on the downside after testing it a number of times already.

The near-term pattern, however, has been for the S&P to trade in a range between 1,040 on the downside and 1,100-1,120 on the upside. During Wednesday’s trading session, we are not seeing big buyers at the bottom of this band, but there are buyers nontheless with all three major averages rising on the day.

Considering the pervasiveness of bearish sentiment, very close support on the S&P at 1,040 and a potential upside catalyst with the non-farm payrolls number being released on Friday, a high risk/reward trade right now would be to load up on high beta names today using tight stops.

Names that will likely outperform during a rally include CF Industries (NYSE: CF), Freeport-McMoran (NYSE: FCX), Alcoa (NYSE: AA), and Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT).
