It has been a busy week in our office, how was your week? We are currently working on our next survey and a micro business event in the Boston area (more details to come). This week’s edition of Micro Business Roundup has two articles discussing changes to tax codes. We aren’t experts in the field but the topic is something to keep your eye on.  Have a great weekend.

Watch out for copycats that can steal your business idea – Did you know that the Snuggie was not the first blanket with arms? It was merely the company that had the larger marketing budget. This story offers advice on avoiding having your business idea being stolen or copied by competitors including filing patents.

How to Build Your Marketing Budget – A common question that businesses of all sizes have is on how much should be spent on advertising.  While there is no silver bullet or one-size fits all answer, this article from Inc. offers some good advice when laying out your marketing budget.

Analyzing the Small-Business Tax Hysteria – There has been a lot said about taxes in the past few weeks. With all of the conflicting views, the whole topic can be confusing. This article from the New York Times cuts through some of the clutter and gets to the root of what the changes in the tax code mean for your business.

The 5 Deadly Sins of Voice Mail – Are your voicemails going unanswered to clients and leads? If so, check out this piece from Jon Janstch who breaks down the five deadly sins of voicemail and offers some ways to bring more value to a voicemail.

Tax Increase Would Hit Few Small Businesses – The new tax codes are a hot button issue heading into the midterm elections. According to the Joint Committee of Taxation, 97 percent of business owners will not be subject to the higher tax rates.  It is definitely something that you should keep abreast with.
